How to Get Everyone Hooked on Your Intranet

They say time is money, and these days, the intranet isn't getting much of either. The latest SWOOP Analytics 2024 SharePoint Intranet Benchmarking Report gives us some solid tips on how to get more love for your company's intranet (SharePoint, specifically).

Who's Actually Using Your Intranet?

SWOOP Analytics found that 86% of employees check out the intranet, but they're not sticking around. With an average daily visit of just 16 minutes, you’ve got to grab their attention fast. Make sure the must-know news and content are right there when they log in.

When’s the Best Time to Post?

Turns out, people are most active on the intranet between 8-9am and 1-3pm, especially on Tuesdays. Posting during these times can seriously boost engagement. Early morning and post-lunch are prime times for sharing important updates.

How Long Should Your Articles Be?

When it comes to intranet articles, shorter is often better. The top 10% of news pages get 72% of the visits, and most people only read one article a week. The sweet spot for article length is 300-600 words. Human-interest stories always do well, no matter their length. For company announcements, keep it short and to the point.

What Devices Are People Using?

Almost everyone—98.37% to be exact—accesses the intranet via desktop, with hardly anyone using mobile devices. This means your intranet needs to be optimized for desktop use, ensuring it's easy and efficient to navigate.

Now, I do think mobile-first platforms likely have much higher percentages of accessibility via mobile devices. SharePoint isn't exactly known for being mobile-first.

The Power of Quality Content

A few really good articles can get most of your employees' attention. Focus on creating valuable, engaging content that your team will actually want to read. Since they have a limited "news reading budget," make each article count.
