Exploring Cross-Cultural Journalism: A Conversation with Medill Students in Tokyo

Updated: Mar 16, 2024

Imagine the bustling streets of Tokyo, alive with the energy of discovery as a group of bright journalism students from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism immerse themselves in the heart of Japan's capital. This was the scene as nearly 15 Master of Science in Journalism students embarked on a journey of exploration as part of the #MedillExplores program.

During their Tokyo visit, the students had the opportunity to engage with professionals like Stephanie Roberts, an expatriate from the U.S. who has made Tokyo her home for nearly two years. Roberts, an experienced communications professional, shared insights from her career journey and briefly dived into the intriguing realm of generative AI, a topic that captivated the curious minds of the students.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Roberts passionately discussed the cultural nuances and workplace dynamics that distinguish life in Japan from that in the U.S. The students eagerly posed questions, probing into topics ranging from diversity, equity, and inclusion to the intricacies of navigating a foreign work environment.

Reflecting on the experience, Professor Cici Rogers remarked, "[Stephanie's] insights as an expat and a woman in an executive position were invaluable, and [her] career path was inspiring." Indeed, Roberts' firsthand accounts provided invaluable lessons on the importance of cultural fluency and adaptability in the field of communicataions.

The #MedillExplores program not only exposes students to diverse global perspectives but also fosters a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our world—an essential trait for aspiring journalists in an increasingly globalized society.

As we continue to navigate a rapidly changing media landscape, the lessons gleaned from cross-cultural encounters like these serve as a reminder of the transformative power of storytelling to bridge divides and foster empathy.
